Buttermilk Floral is a floral design studio and flower farm located in Arcata, California. We’ve been flowering in Humboldt County and beyond since 2005.

Lush garden-inspired floral designs.

Floral Design

We approach our floral design as an art form. Flowers are our medium, your event, our canvas.
Our floral design aesthetic is that of a lush garden style. With twenty years of experience in the design world and a lifetime in the flower growing world we draw from the knowledge of what will work within your season, whether grown on our own farm or from other sources. By using your palette and channeling the season we believe this creates a design that is strongly rooted in place.
At Buttermilk Floral we believe in creating the most sustainable event we can. Local flowers from our own farm, composting all our greenwaste, recycling and reusing our boxes and packaging.

Farm

We began farming in 2016 as a way to elevate our floral designs and create more sustainable events, slowly ading more growing area each year. Fast forward to 2020 when the world turned upside down and all of our weddings were postponed, we decided to dive headlong in and doubled our field production.
Located  on ten acres in Arcata, Ca we grow a variety of every changing blooms.
Each season we plant an acre of annuals,  from amaranth to, zinnias. We have over 100 old fashioned garden roses and hundreds of eucalyptus trees planted. We are always looking for the next exciting flower to grow.
We farm using  no chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Growing our flowers as naturally as possible creates a better habitat for all of us: pollinators, our family, our customers and the world around us.

Where can you find our flowers? Thousands of stems find their way into our wedding and event designs and  thousands of more stems are dried and are turned into bouquets and wreaths which you can find on our website and at local craft fairs. Our market bouquets and bunches of flowers can be found at local grocery stores each summer.

Faye Krause

owner + founder

Faye founded Flora Organica Designs in 2005, (changing the name to Buttermilk Floral in 2024), but her history with flowers extends back to before she was born.

The story goes, that when her mother was pregnant with her, her parents were starting their farm and deciding what they would plant. They decided that if the baby was a boy it would be potatoes and if the baby was a girl it would be flowers. Flowers it was!

Faye has cultivated a love of flowers her whole life, creating posies and wreaths from the time she could walk. The turning point for her came while traveling Europe as a teenager, realizing that when she was away from flowers part of her was missing, and thus Flora Organica Designs was born.

When not designing and farming Faye enjoys running, adventuring with her husband and their daughters Klara and Heidi, and growing a ridiculous amount of blueberries

Our Flower Family

  • Emma

CDO (chief dahlia officer) and Lead Designer

Faye’s sister Emma, can be found doing all things dahlias. Dividing, labeling, planting, harvesting, digging. When not working with dahlias, Emma can be found designing boutonnieres, centerpieces, and arches and generally knowing exactly what Faye means when she incoherently points at something.

  • Jordan

Faye’s husband, tractor driver, builder, field planner, irrigation specialist, and all-around keeps the farm running and makes it all possible. Jordan is the backbone of our farm.

  • Klara and Heidi

Faye and Jordan’s girls who you will often catch a glimpse of behind the scenes in our Instagram. It is a joy to be able to watch them grow up on a farm the way I did.
